Mr. Joe's reply

July 29, 2013

Dear Jack,

I’m glad to hear that you have enjoyed Knucklehead so much. Jon Scieszka is a very talented writer who really makes his readers feel like they’re right there alongside the Scieszka boys on all their adventures and crazy escapades. It’s always a lot of fun to smile and laugh when you read. You may wish to read more of Scieszka.

I can tell you like funny books because you’ve read the DWK series. Jeff Kinney and Jon Scieszka seem to have a similar sense of humor. They both like traditional “boy” jokes and enjoy things that have to do with destroying things. They create characters who manage to get into all kinds of mischief and somehow seem to survive for the better. What other funny books have you read? Have you ever seen the Guys Read website? There are so many interesting things to explore, and it features a book of the month, which is really helpful in picking out new books to read.

I think you might like books by Gary Paulsen. He writes about survival. His characters have to endure incredibly difficult circumstances just to get out of wherever they are alive. Hatchet is an exciting story about a boy who survives a plane crash and only has a hatchet to help him survive in the wilderness of northern Canada. Check it out.

Right now I am listening to the biography of Steve Jobs, the founder of Apple Computers. It is a fascinating story, because the reader learns all kinds of interesting details about the life of this true genius. For example, many times, if he didn’t get what he wanted, he would scream and cry, even as an adult. This tantrum-like behavior was upsetting to a lot of people, who would just kind of give in to him to avoid provoking any further reactions like this. I never would have imagined that he would behave this way. I look forward to hearing more about how Steve acted and what made him so unique.

That’s all for now, Jack. In the meantime, don’t ever forget that

Dear Mr. Joe,
I am reading Knuckle head by Jon Scieszka.
Knuckle head is a series of short stories. I will write about one called “Readers Beware”. In “Readers Beware” Jon finds an ad in the back a comic for a 100 soldier set for a dollar and 25 cents. When he opens it he thinks the mail man dropped it on the ground. Then he realizes that it wasn't broken it’s just super small. Then at the end of the story, he sells it to Jim for a dollar and 50 cents.
My favorite part was when he was looking at the small soldiers wondering if it was broken, and how then he gave to his brother Jim and made him pay $1.50. I liked this because it reminded me of Diary of a Wimpy Kid. It also reminded me of me and my little brother Max. He said, "I ripped open the paper and pulled out a little box it seemed a bit small. About the size of a deck of cards. I figured maybe they packed each division in a separate box. Army guys in one. Navy guys in another.Jets and Tanks and Battle cruisers in another. I opened the little cardboard box, which was marked sort of like a foot locker. Tiny little bits of dark green plastic spilled out. Each as small as a dime of black plastic spilled out”. This part reminds me of Diary of a Wimpy Kid because Greg bought a bunch of stuff out of a comic book and it was a rip off when none of the stuff he bought from the comic book ads worked like it was supposed to. This also reminded me of my brother Max because he tries to make me pay too much for lots of different things. One time he made me pay him five dollars for him to take my share of the trash because I really didn’t want to do It.
Well, Mr. Joe, I am more than halfway through Knuckle head and loving it. I enjoy reading Diary of a Wimpy Kid. I am taking a break from Knuckle head and reading Diary of a Wimpy Kid. Jon Scieszka is a master at storytelling and descriptive writing. I would recommend this book to anyone who likes funny books, or just a good story.

Reading rocks! :)

Well, OR, I am less than halfway through The Mockingjay and loving it. I wish I had about two hours to myself to just sit and finish it. I am completely in the world of Panem (the name of the country.) Collins is a master at storytelling and descriptive writing. I would recommend this book to anyone who likes sci-fi definitely, or just a good story. I think people who like the work of Ray Bradbury, George Orwell, Lois Lowry and Margaret Peterson-Haddix would love this series. Until next time, don’t ever forget that,

Reading rocks,
